Tanauan is a town located in the east part of the province of Leyte. It is a town facing a large body of water, which is the San Pablo and San Pedro Bay. The primary source of living in the said town is fishing. However, Tanauan as a town by the bay is not just known for the fishing industry but also has been noted as the Skim Board Capital of the Philippines.



The birth of skim boarding in Tanauan was a history made in the country. It first arose in the year 2000, when an American from California visited the town and saw that the place was good for the water sport. He introduced skim boarding to the people of Tanauan and even taught them how to make skim boards.



Now, skim boarding has been a remarkable competition hosted by the Municipality of Tanauan since 2005. This was spearheaded by the late Hon. Roque A. Tiu who has been the alkalde mayor of the town for long years. Yearly, skim boarding competition is held twice- during April and December, in the said town. This attracted the nearby towns until it has become a National Skim Boarding Competition. Skim board enthusiasts from different parts of the country participate in this prestigious event. Even those from other parts of the world like Singapore and Malaysia, they come to visit the town to witness and do skim board exhibition. Tourists try to visit the town every Skim Board Competition because of the cool ambiance and enjoyable experience that is rest assured through the effort of the Local Government Unit of the Tanauan. Skim boarding in Tanauan is fastly growing as it becomes more fun. The officials try to continue and develop this remarkable water sport competition in the place.



Tanauan has definitely created its name internationally by hosting a water sport competition where Filipinos could also excel. Some Tanauananon skim board icons have been gaining trophies in international competitions. With all these, Tanauan is not just the home of knowledge but also has become the home of prestige.
