Guiuan, the southernmost tip of Eastern Samar, and a second class municipality of the Philippines.
It was just this year, 2012, when we happen to visit Guiuan, my grandmother’s hometown. I was happy to see my relatives and cousins because after 2 years or so, I happened to visit the place again. It was a Saturday evening when we arrived there and we decided to go to church the following day.
It was the same old church I use to visit in Guiuan. If you happen to see the façade of the church, you can surely say that it is really old and that it is indeed, a historical church. It’s as if you traveled through the olden times because of its designs and structure.
I still remember the church, because I use to go there with my grandmother when I was still a kid. I guess the people of Guiuan wants to preserve it as it was during the 16th century. Only then that I finally learned that the church was considered as one of the national treasure church, one of only 26 in the country.
Originally, it was made of wood and was rebuilt by priests and natives. Nothing much has been changed. Everything is original and only few interventions were made. It has a 42-square meter fortress and shell embellishments are seen in the baptistery, side altars, side windows and niches.
Indeed, Philippines have always been rich in historical belongings and culture. Yes! I am a Proud Pinoy!
