A 45 minute boat ride from Mercedes’ fish port will take you to one of the town’s seven islands, the serene Apuao Grande Island.

The island was once home to a lavish resort owned by an Australian foreigner but due to costly maintenance brought about by frequent storms that hit, what was once a beautiful resort is now left to perish. What used to be posh villas and few cottages still stand as a reminder of what was Apuao Grande Resort.

Still, the island itself did not lose its appeal. In fact, it has regained its remote island/mysterious charm. The beach shore is lined with somewhat of white to almost yellow sand, and depending on the season, the locals say the sand sometimes turn pink.

With Agoho trees (evergreen trees that resembles Pine trees) everywhere, you can tie a hammock literally anywhere in the island. It gives out a carefree and relaxed atmosphere, perfect for people that want escape, hear the waves of the ocean and the swaying of the trees. Make sure to bring your own tents if you plan to stay overnight. There are available rooms in the lone house in the island, but arrangements for lodging must be done in advance.

The ocean is perfect for water sports like kayaking, skim boarding and surfing. The pristine waters that surrounds the island is home to star fishes and various sea critters within arm’s reach, make sure to just look and not play with them. Beautiful shells decorate Apuao that adds to its natural and well preserved allure.

Bring food and snacks for a relaxing picnic in one of the cottages on the island. No commercial establishments in the area, so make sure to bring your basics. Make it a point to bring your trash back with you when it is time to leave. Remember to “leave no trace” to preserve the beauty of the places we visit.
