Only a handful of indigenous tribes have sustained their culture in its truest form. Most opted to adapt and modernized their way of living to keep up with the changing times. I had the pleasure to meet a tribe that has managed to do both: The Iraya Mangyans of Puerto Galera minutely adapted to the now but still adhere loyally to their beginnings.
At the Mangyan Village at Sitio Talipanan, Barangay Aninuan in Puerto Galera, I was mesmerized by the quaint town of the Iraya’s. Newly constructed Mangyan houses decorate the area and facilities (basketball court, school, etc) evokes an atmosphere of a simple life, that is truly indigenous but also very welcoming.
This village was made out of love. Literally. A generous family fell in love with the Mangyans and this community is their love letter to them. The houses, facilities, public school and the children’s education are all provided for by the foundation of this big-hearted family.
Basket weaving and farming are the main sources of income of the Irayas. They provide well for their family and opt to stay away from the city to preserve their culture. Walking around the town, I felt that they are still very shy and are withdrawn from outsiders. When you visit them, remember that most are very timid. It is best to respect their land and just smile at them and some will offer that smile back.
Souvenirs made out of nito vines made by the Iraya women are available in the village. These are very affordable and a chance for tourists to take home a piece of the Mangyan culture with them.
Visitors are welcome to take a look of how the Mangyans live their life and try their hardest to preserve their culture amidst the modern world. Remember to respect their community and culture, just like how they respect and welcomed you into their homes.
