“Education is the only means that can’t be taken from you “as what we can recall from our parents reminding us to study well, but we sometimes ignore this. We’re even lucky we were able to go to school and study, for many street children are wishing to be in our place, and be able to study.
Many street children are hoping that through education, they would be able to help their family to improve their living. And these hopes were granted with the help of the “pushcart classroom” and Efren Peñaflorida’s act.
Just like many other children who suffer poverty, Efren Peñaflorida’s life was full of struggles even in his early age. Living near the dump site is not that easy, so, Efren knew back then that it was education which will be an instrument to improve their living.
With this experience, Efren Peñaflorida with the Dynamic Teen Company, offers Filipino youth an alternative to street gangs through the "pushcart classroom", wherein pushcarts were stocked with school materials such as books, pens, tables, and chairs, used on Saturdays to recreate school settings in unconventional locations such as the cemetery or trash dump.
Peñaflorida was given an award by the CNN for his extraordinary act in helping people and was named as CNN Hero of the Year 2009.
This act of Efren Peñaflorida did not just help street children, also, it gives honor to our country, it shows how good Filipinos are and it serves an example to all Filipino people to do even small things but with great meaning.
Through education you can’t just help your family, also, you can help the country and contribute to its development, so we must give importance to it.
