Youtube seems to be one of the best tools for instant stardom.
This fact is particularly true for Filipinos. Ten-year old Filipino-Canadian Maria Lourdes Aragon, from Winnipeg, is slowly gaining popularity for her cover of 'Born This Way' by American pop singer and songwriter Lady Gaga. Her Youtube video has already garnered more than 39 million views and still counting.
On her Youtube page, Maria wrote: "I'm using this channel to share to everyone my gift of music and the talent that God gave me. I sing, I giggle, I laugh...I love to entertain."
Maria, who started singing at the age of three, has Lady Gaga herself as one of her fans. The international star heaped praises on Maria during a live talk over a local radio show.
"You have such a beautiful voice and you are such a joy to watch... when (entertainment blogger) Perez (Hilton) showed me your video I was so overjoyed I started to cry. I was so happy... I knew the world would rip (the song) to shreds when it came out. But when I saw you so young and so beautiful singing those words so purely, it reminded me why I wrote the song in the first place," said Gaga, who also invited Maria to sing onstage with her at her upcoming concert in Toronto this March.
The Fil-Canadian was also a guest on the Ellen DeGeneres show where she performed 'Born This Way', with the version that for all purposes made the song her own and ended with a standing ovation from the audience. Maria has replicated the feats of fellow Pinoys Charice Pempengco and Arnel Pineda who have performed at the same show.
Lady Gaga affectionately calls her fans the 'Little Monsters'. Maybe she should call Maria something else. 'Baby Gaga' perhaps?
