Further south along the coastline of Barangay Telegrafo in the Municipality of Tolosa, Leyte stands the Scout Valeriano "Yayong" Abello Marker.
The marker, facing the vastness of Leyte Gulf and amidst sparkling sand, stands on the very spot where Scout Abello, with the use of semaphore flags, helped direct US liberators where to aim their bombardment along the shores, thereby, avoiding civilian casualties.
Abello, undaunted by Japanes soldiers and using his limited knowledge signaled the Allied forces sending the message via semaphore flags: "Don't bomb the beaches. There are civilians. If possible, let me direct the shelling."
His bravery saved the lives of thousand Leytenos during the bombardment of the seashores of Leyte Gulf by the allied forces.
His marker is located atb Brgy. Telegrafo, Tolosa, Leyte 30 kilometers away from Tacloban City.
