A Surprise inside a Coconut

In our town in Dulag Leyte, we have a wide plantation of coconut trees. In this particular tree, is where our family also gets our financial needs just by selling copra.

We all know that there are so many uses of coconut trees in our life. But as a child by then, aside from its delicious white meat and juice, I enjoyed eating Coconut Cotyledon. In our place, we call it as “Bubuwa or Buwa”. Sounds funny for me because we have another meaning of “Buwa” which is to lie. So whenever we see someone eating this bubuwa, we often tease him as being a liar.

I can still remember when my brother and I were choosing old coconut and let father open both our options. Whoever has a “bubuwa” inside the coconut husk will be a winner.

It tastes really sweet that is why I love it. The smaller one is much sweeter than the bigger one because when it grows bigger there is already water that is mixed inside the cotyledon.
