November 11 is the World Run Day 2012. World Run Day is celebrated each year every Sunday closest to November 8. From what the event is called, "World Run Day" is a day for runners worldwide to join each other in celebration of running.
World Run Day did not start in the Philippines, but, dedicated runners around the world celebrate the special occasion. World Run Day was inspired in 1999 by Long Island Runner Bill McDermott. It all began when Bill was experimenting with a computer program that produced t-shirt designs. As an avid runner himself, he asked himself "what would be the ultimate running event. His immediate response was a global event called "World Run Day". Having the opportunity to select the event day, he dedicated it to his brother killed in an automobile accident on Nov 8, 1983. As many running events occur on a Sunday, World Run Day is observed on the Sunday closest to November 8 each year.
One can celebrate this day even if you are not a professional runner and even if you are only an enthusiast. You can run with a small group, in a race event, or even running alone.
In Bacolod City, Bacolod Runners grouped together at the Provincial Capitol Lagoon. Almost 100 runners joined the celebration. Heavy rain poured but it did not stop them from celebrating. Some brought in snacks to share to all those who participated like juice, arroz caldo, bananas and chocolates.
It was a fun, sporty day in Bacolod. Runners celebrate the sport of running by promoting the health benefits of running. It is also a day of friendship - we're one can meet friends and new friends who love the sport!
